Types of care

What are the stages or phases or care?

Even though most people who come to see us are in pain or have a specific concern, we are specialists in whole body wellness care.  Here are some examples of what people look for regarding their health:

Maintenance and Wellness Care

Chiropractic Pain, Rehabilitation, Maintenance and Wellness Care:

1. Maintenance Care:

After working on a specific issue and you have no more pain, we need to make sure you are functioning well and staying that way.  Just because you are not in pain does not mean you are fully healed.  You are part of the way there but just going back to the way things were before your symptom appeared without getting any body work will most likely lead you back to where you were before.

Once you are functioning well for a period of time, you reach the maintenance phase of care.  This means you now maintain your improved health and prevent going backwards to where you were before.  During this phase it is easy to then combat anything that may arise before it can lead to a serious issue and your body will be strong enough to handle the daily stress you may be under.

We will teach you how to incorporate good nutrition, exercise habits, posture and stress relief into your everyday life, thereby promoting vitality, endurance, and the ability to enjoy life at its fullest.  If you start to feel the old problem start coming back, we can tackle it quickly without you going back to the beginning of care once again.

A good way to look at chiropractic is to think about dentistry. Teeth are bones too.   We all know it takes a long time to develop tooth decay, which leads to cavity, gum disease if left untreated.  Regular maintenance and check-ups does not allow plaque to build up and cause a problem. The spinal column is the same except instead of decay, it leads to arthritis, lack of proper movement and nervous system imbalance leading to stress on your systems if alignment and body work is not administered.

Few things as complicated as your body can be "fixed" and then ignored. Think of your car, your teeth, or your relationships. They take time and effort to maintain, but you know it's worth it in the long run. That's why we recommend a regular schedule of chiropractic check-ups and try to make it as affordable as we can so you can stay in condition.  This is not to scare you but to let you know that taking care of your body is key to living a long prosperous quality of life.

2. Wellness Care:

Once we have your body maintained you may make the decision to make sure your whole body is functioning at its best.  This is where our Insight Station comes in.  We can do periodic scanning to determine where your health is and prevent anything that may be lingering without becoming symptomatic yet.  Remember, symptoms are your body's way of telling you something has broken down and needs help.  Symptoms come along after long term stress on the area so doing a scan to see how your body is working before feeling any symptom will keep your body as stress free as it can be.

3. Immediate pain or symptom care:

The majority of patients consult a chiropractor because they have an ache or pain. Most people know we are the ones to contact for neck and back pain.  Pain care is the first phase of care.  Our main objective is to eliminate or reduce your discomfort and stabilize your condition in the shortest amount of time. If your body is inflamed, it won’t heal in a timely manner.  We can accelerate healing by taking pressure off of the nerves that supply your blood, immune and all organs.

Pain normally goes away pretty fast with chiropractic care but pain is basically your body telling you it is time to take care of this issue. It has had enough.  Once the pain is gone, we can really start getting you back to optimal health.

Back

How many times do you have to see a chiropractor?

The number of times you visit a chiropractor during this phase really depends on a few things. Age, prior injuries, whether your condition is acute or chronic and your general health.  The better you are to your body the easier it is for you to heal and move forward.

It's hard to say how long it will be until you see consistent relief.  It could be as short as a week or up to a month for you to get relief. If you are not responding to chiropractic care during this phase, you may be referred to another health-care provider.

 4. Chiropractic Rehabilitative Care:

Once your condition has stabilized and you have consistently had relief and our tests show you can now move forward to this phase, the objective is to correct anything that may have contributed to your initial complaint and address anything that may be lurking waiting to show up.  We want to strengthen your muscles and improve your nervous system to optimal condition allowing you to function properly and send the appropriate signals throughout your body.

The frequency of office visits is reduced over a period of two to six weeks. This is all dependent on how much stress you are under and when you start to notice loss of function or movement.  Remember, loss of function leads to pain if not addressed, just like plague leads to cavities.

Many conditions for which people come in for care have developed over many years. So, correcting these problems is a true rehabilitative process. It helps to understand that it takes time to correct these conditions. Just like it takes time to lose weight, learn a new sport, get in shape.

Once your discomfort has subsided, you may think all is well and choose to abandon your efforts. We all like to feel good. If you end your care before fully healing the muscles and soft tissues, you can invite a relapse and go back to doing what they did before we started training them to move properly. This is a mistake many people make, and it sets them up for recurring health issues which I refer to as a roller coaster ride with ups and downs.

It's hard to believe that, after all the time, effort, energy, and money put into correcting a problem, a patient would choose to forgo this relatively easy phase of care! As much as we'd love to see you in our office, we'd much rather assist you in maintaining your health rather than relieving and chasing your pain.

Getting to real maintenance and wellness is work but well worth it in the long run and actually much more cost effective.  Just think of how much money you spend on relieving pain and not being able to work.  If you maintained your health, it would allow you to keep medical bills down and not have to stay home to re-cooperate.  Wouldn't it be great to take off work when you want to go on a vacation instead of staying home in pain?
