Arthritis and how Vitamin D can help: Chiropractic Tips

Arthritis can be debilitating.  Whether it is Osteoarthritis that is caused by stress and wear or Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) which is an inflammatory condition.

Vitamin D has been shown to help improve symptoms and keep the condition from becoming worse.

The Journal of Natural Science, Biology and Medicine discovered in 2018 that vitamin D plays a large role in Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Vitamin D is not really a vitamin but is really a hormone that helps regulate our immune system.  Since most inflammatory conditions are affected by the immune system, having this hormone in normal levels is key for feeling better and being comfortable.

Adults should try and get 600 IU of vitamin D daily.  Especially if you are not getting enough sunlight.

So how can we get more Vitamin D?

  • More time in the sun:
10-15 minutes of sun per day for light skin and a bit longer for darker complexions.  Make sure you increase the time slowly so that your skin gets used to the exposure and wear sun screen to help prevent the risk of skin cancer.

If you do not have a lot of sun, investing in a UV lamp to make sure you are getting enough rays.

  • Sit by windows with sunlight:
If it is cold outside or you can not get outside, windows work wonders

  • Eat fish: Several fish have high levels of vitamin D
    1. Cod: You can get cod liver oil. One teaspoon gives you 453 IUs of Vitamin D
    2. Salmon: 3 ounces has 447 IU
    3. Tuna: 3 ounces has 154 IU
    4. Sardines: 2 fillets have 46 IU
Note: for you sushi lovers out there, raw fish has higher levels of Vitamin D so if you are craving lots of sushi, your levels may be low.  Your body always knows.

  • Eat foods with Vitamin D:
    * Orange juice: One cup has 137 IU
    * Eggs: One large egg has 41 IU (eggs pretty much give us all the nutrients our body needs
    * Mushrooms: 1 cup has 2 IU

  • Vitamin D supplements:
There are tons out there.  All of them have different dosages so read the directions.

Vitamin D helps your body absorb and retain calcium and phosphorus which are critical for bone strength.  Vitamin D has also been shown to reduce cancer cell growth, decrease infections and of course reduce inflammation.
