Self Care and Professional Care, when do you see a doctor? A Chiropractor's Perspective

As we get older we start noticing imperfections in our body. Whether it be pain, tightness, skin conditions, digestion issues or any type of change we deem unhealthy.

Depending on what is going on, it is important to see the right person for you.  In many cases, cream, supplements, braces, or home remedies will be recommended to help your condition along with visiting a doctor to monitor your progress and discuss what is happening with your body.

What can become a problem is when someone relies on a supplement or home remedy to solve the problem and not see a visit a doctor to follow up.

I often hear people tell me they have digestion, liver, joint issues, heart burn, acid reflux, muscle aches, sleeping difficulty. There are supplements out there to help any problem you may have but this does not mean that it is a cure.  In most cases there needs to be treatment along with therapies and home self care.

Self care is needed at all times and is very important to staying healthy but getting guidance to understand what your body needs is imperative.  Deep breathing, meditation, stretching isn't always enough to make sure your body is getting what it needs.

A good example is in the case of depression or emotional trauma.  Breathing exercises, meditation, talking with friends often times is not enough.  In many cases it is recommended to see a therapist, psychologist or other mental professional. Self care will help but they will give you tips and techniques for what you need to do to heal.

The same goes for physical health.  Eating well, doing prescribed exercises, stretches help keep your body healthy.  This does not mean that our body doesn't need work.  Professionals that understand how soft tissue heals, help your joints and body move better and give tips for healing is always necessary for healing.  Seeing a professional and changing lifestyle habits that help you utilize your self care is necessary to get you healthy and stay healthy.

So is It is necessary to see a doctor even after pain is gone after an injury.  Yes, to make sure progress is monitored and changes to care can be administered to help you heal.
