Sleep Deprivation Negatively Impacts Health: How can seeing a Chiropractor help?

How does sleep deprivation adversely affect our health?

Here are the effects not getting enough sleep:

  1.  Reduction of cognitive performance:

(reduces problem solving and decision making skills as well as short-term memory, impairs judgment, reduces logical reasoning and critical thinking, reduces visual attention and processing)

  2. Adversely affects mood and emotional well being:

This includes increasing feelings of stress, sadness, frustration, anxiety, and rage

  3. Impairs immune function:

This means you will get sick easier. More colds, flus etc.

  4. Influences the production and release of important hormones:

There are different hormones that are more active during sleep than when awake.  Check this out:

    • Negatively influences the production and release of leptin and ghrelin, Hormones that affect appetite regulation.
    • Increased levels of cortisol which contributes to high blood pressure, a weaker immune system, increase appetite and abdominal weight gain.
    • Reduces the effectiveness of insulin, increasing blood sugar levels and increases the risk of diabetes.
    • Can inhibit the nocturnal production and release of growth hormones in men, which may contribute to loss of muscles and reduced metabolic rate.

So not getting enough sleep is just not about your concentration and energy levels.  It is about total health.

Chiropractic helps regulate your nervous system.  After treatments, your body is better equipped to regulate your sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) and your parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest).  When these systems are working correctly you sleep deeper and better.  Contact Dr. Amie Gregory, DC, CCEP, ANF at either one of her offices in the San Francisco Bay Area.
